Westmeath v Offaly U-20 hurling clash to go ahead

The Leinster Under-20 hurling championship match between Offaly and Westmeath is going ahead tonight (Wednesday), it has been confirmed.

There was confusion about the fixture after claims emerged that inter-county games at underage level won't be allowed under Level 5 restrictions.

However, with the stricter restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19 not coming in until midnight tonight, the game is set to go ahead.

The venue for the Bord Gáis Energy Leinster U-20 hurling opening round game is Faithful Fields in Kilcormac, with a 7pm throw-in.

Both team line-ups are provided below, with Fr Dalton's duo John Tumelty and Owen McCabe named on the Westmeath team. Tumelty is also well known as a Tang footballer.

A strong Offaly forward line includes Cathal Kiely of Kilcormac-Killoughey, Brian Duignan (son of Offaly GAA chairman Michael Duignan) and Shinrone's Killian Sampson.

Meanwhile, there still isn't clarity over whether underage GAA fixtures will take place under Level 5 restrictions from tomorrow onwards.

The Westmeath minor hurlers are listed to play Dublin in the Electric Ireland Leinster championship quarter-finals in Mullingar this Saturday.

The EirGrid All-Ireland U-20 football final between Galway and Dublin is also scheduled to take place in Portlaoise on Saturday.

The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture has stated that any decision on whether underage championship games can continue during Level 5 restrictions "is still being clarified".
