History of Athlone's Custume Barracks on display in new video

The history of Athlone’s Custume Barracks has been brought to a video format, chronicling the lives of its soldiers and its impact on the town.

The video shows the history of the Barracks from its origins at the end of the Williamite war in 1691 to the early 20th century with the outbreak of the First World War, and contains readings of first-hand accounts from soldiers as well as various illustrations, photographs and historical documents.

The video, produced as part of the Historian in Residence programme for Westmeath County Council and supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, can be viewed below.
