Athlone's Luke Carty set to make USA Rugby debut against England at Twickenham

Athlone's Luke Carty is set to make his debut for the US national rugby team on America's Independence Day, as the side prepares to face England in Twickenham this Sunday, July 4.

The 23-year-old flyhalf was today named in the number 10 spot in the matchday 23, with the USA Rugby website indicating he would be one of three players making their national team debut as starters on Sunday.

The Barrymore native moved Stateside to play for the Major League Rugby side LA Giltinis earlier this year.

Carty is eligible to play for the US through a grandmother who was born in New York.

On Twitter his brother, Irish international Jack Carty, tweeted his congratulations and said he was just sorry the family couldn't be there in person for the landmark occasion on Sunday.

The England-USA game kicks off at 2pm on Sunday and will be televised live on Channel 4.

The USA side will then travel to Dublin to face Ireland at the Aviva Stadium on July 10, in a match that will be broadcast live on RTÉ.
