Burnett faces major task to reach final after first day of qualifying

Keenagh shooter Derek Burnett, who learned his sport as a child member of the Athlone Clay Pigeon Shooting Club with his father, is facing an uphill battle to qualify for the final of the Men's Trap.

After the first three round of qualifying, Burnett lies 25th out of the 29 competitors – and with only the top six reaching the final, it's very unlikely the Longford man will make up the deficit.

Burnett's opening round score of 22 from a possible 25 left him chasing and although he performed creditably with two successive scores of 24 in his next two rounds, his three-round total of 70 leaves him three points behind the top six.

The final two qualifying rounds will be held tomorrow morning.

It's an historic Olympics for Burnett though as he is only the third Irish competitors to take part in five Olympic Games.

Burnett has represented Ireland in the 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympics.
