Traffic moving again after Athlone bridge collision causes diesel spill

A piece of machinery collided with a railway bridge, resulting in a diesel spillage and traffic delays in Athlone earlier today (Friday).

The incident occurred on the Coosan Point Road, near Auburn Terrace, before lunchtime.

It involved an excavator which collided with the railway bridge while being transported on the back of a low loader.

A Garda representative told the Westmeath Independent that the accident was not particularly serious as there were no injuries and and only minor damage caused.

A spillage from the diesel tank of the excavator meant there were traffic delays and diversions in place for a time but these have since been lifted.
