File for DPP over assault on young woman at Athlone Castle

Gardai are preparing a file for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) after what was described as a serious assault on a young woman by a man in the centre of Athlone.

The incident took place beside Athlone Castle between midnight and 12.30am on Saturday morning, September 4.

A male suspect fled the scene when another male came to the assistance of the victim. The young woman was distressed after what had happened, and the man who helped her stayed with her until her friends arrived.

Gardai arrested a suspect in the case on Wednesday morning, September 8, and he was detained for questioning for most of the day before being released that evening.

A public appeal was also issued for the 'good Samaritan' who had come to the assistance of the woman to come forward and help the Garda investigation, and this man did contact the Gardai on Friday evening (September 10).

"This person was crucial because we knew that they were physically there at the time this event happened. So that was key," said Sergeant Andrew Haran of Athlone Garda Station.

"They came to the aid of a person who shouted for help, so they were there, and they saw the culprit as well."

He said Athlone Gardai were hopeful that charges would be brought in the case but a file would have to be sent to the DPP who would determine what form any prosecution might take.

Sergeant Haran thanked all who assisted last week in sharing the news that the Gardai were looking for the 'good Samaritan' to come forward and help with their investigation.
