Water restrictions in Athlone area tonight

Irish Water working in partnership with Westmeath County Council wishes to advise customers in Athlone and surrounding areas that an overnight water restriction is necessary tonight following a mechanical issue at the treatment plant.

Dedicated crews are working to complete the repairs as quickly and as efficiently as possible to safeguard the water supply to homes and businesses.

The restriction will be in place from 10pm tonight, Tuesday October 26, until 6am tomorrow which will impact customers in Athlone Town, Baylin, Mount Temple, The Ories, Garrycastle, Dublin Road, Ardnaglug, Fardrum, Moydrum, Blyry, Killyon Hill, Bonavalley and surrounding areas.

Typically, it takes two to three hours following essential works for normal supply to restore to all customers.

The overnight restriction is essential to protect water levels in the local reservoir and ensure customers have enough water to supply to their homes and businesses during the daytime, according to Irish Water.

John Gavin, Regional Operations Lead with Irish Water said: “This restriction is necessary to safeguard daytime water supply for all homes and business in Athlone and surrounding areas. Repairs are being conducted as quickly and as efficiently as possible at the water treatment plant. Irish Water understands the inconvenience night-time restrictions can have on customers and it appreciates customers’ patience as we work to complete the repairs and restore normal water supply to all customers”.

The utility asks customers to continue to be mindful of how they use water and to conserve water where possible. While hand washing remains a priority, simple water conservation efforts can have a big impact on reducing demand on the supply.

Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth and shaving can save up to 6 litres of water per minute while taking a shower instead of a bath can also make a big difference in water savings.
