Ladies’ SFC final: Milltown back on the throne

Milltown are Westmeath’s ladies’ senior football champions again after halting St Mary’s, Rochfortbridge’s quest for three-in-a-row at Kinnegad today.

Sarah Dillon, fresh from her All-Ireland winning exploits with Westmeath, was the hero again and put in a player of the match performance, netting a crucial early goal to set Milltown on their way.

After a slow start in tough weather conditions, St Mary’s took the lead before Milltown skipper Gráinne Byrne equalised. Dillon’s goal then followed, and some tit-for-tat scoring left the Rathconrath side with a 1-4 to 0-5 lead at half-time.

Mary’s stayed in contention, with Megan Brick among the scorers, but Milltown still led by that Dillon goal at the second half water break (1-7 to 0-7).

When Michaela Brady pulled one back for the ‘Bridge after the restart, the pressure was on for the challengers, but Milltown got the requisite scores late on to ensure enough of a cushion, and a late kick Dillon sealed a five-point victory (1-10 to 0-8).

Milltown face the winners of tomorrow’s Meath ladies’ SFC decider between Dunboyne and Seneschalstown.
