One-way traffic system proposed for Athlone street

Westmeath County Council has begun a public consultation process on a proposal to introduce a one-way system of traffic on the full length of Friary Lane in the centre of Athlone.

It will mean that motorists can only travel from Church Street into Friary Lane and not in the opposite direction.

The one-way system was proposed at the December meeting of the Council’s car parking sub-committee and was brought before the January meeting of the Athlone Moate Municipal District for approval.

Cllr Aengus O’Rourke proposed that the local authority commence the public consultation process and it was seconded by Cllr John Dolan.

District Engineer, Pat Nally told the January Municipal meeting that the recommendation is to make Friary lane one way from north to south and a proposer and seconder was needed so that it could proceed to public consultation.

When Cllr Louise Heavin asked it there would be access to the Bank and the Franciscan Friary as part of this process she was told by Pat Nally that the one way system was proposed from Church street as far as the Bank entrance as the remainder of Friary Lane is already subject to a one way system of traffic.

A detailed plan of the proposed one-way system can be inspected at Athlone Civic Centre from Monday next, January 24 to Friday, February 25 and members of the public have until March 11 next to make submissions.

Submissions can be made to the District Administrator of the Athlone Moate Municipal District, Civic Centre, Church Street, Athlone by email to ammd@westmeathcoco.ie or through the Westmeath County Council consultation portal at consult.westmeathcoco.ie not later than 4pm on Friday, March 11 next.
