Sleeping Flags appeal in Athlone on Saturday

Defence Forces veterans will return to the streets of Athlone to bring awareness to the plight of homeless veterans and fundraise to support ONE’s services to help veterans in need this Saturday.

ONE is conducting the Sleeping Flags Appeal on May 21 in five designated locations nationwide including Athlone.

It is designed to improve awareness and provide funding to support the needs of Irish veterans by the provision of accommodation to homeless and other veterans in need of other advice and support through a network of branches and Veterans’ Support Centres.v

ONE provides accommodation and meals for 54 veterans, who would otherwise be homeless, in its four residential homes and is developing a further home to bring its homeless accommodation to 60 bedrooms. It also has a network of Veteran Support Centres and branches. It costs approximately €1,000,000 per annum for current services and an additional amount for capital funding depending on the projects being undertaken. While it is in receipt of state funding, a considerable amount must be raised.

The Sleeping Flags Appeal is one of the National Fundraising events and will take place in Athlone, Cork, Dublin, Galway and Limerick from 9am to 9pm on May 21, where Defence Forces veterans will return to the streets to bring awareness to the plight of homeless veterans and fundraise to support ONE’s services to help veterans in need.
