At approximately 12.45pm this afternoon, Gardaí conducted a search of a residential property in the town of Moate.

During the course of the search suspected cannabis plants with an estimated value of €156,000 were discovered.

A man in his 50s was arrested and is currently detained, under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, at Athlone Garda station.

Investigations are ongoing.

Local councillor Tom Farrell has expressed his thanks to Gardai for their work.

"Well done to the drugs unit in Athlone. It just shows the value of having a drugs unit in the area," he said.

Cllr Farrell said it was important for people to always co-operate with and assist Gardai and the drugs unit.

And he said drug finds in towns and villages underlined the need for people to always be vigilant as to what is happening in their area.
