An teacher described as "a legend" in Athone's Marist College was given a memorable send-off on his retirement today.

Knockcroghery resident Cathal Fee began teaching in 1986, and had been working in the Marist College for the last 30 years.

On social media, the school shared a video of Mr Fee being given a rapturous reception on a 'victory lap' through the school during his final day.

"A legend of Marist College took up residence in the woodwork room in 1992," tweeted the school.

"After a career of service and dedication to students, today Mr Fee bid farewell to the school he loves."

The Marist described him as "a teacher who cared deeply about his work" and someone who "worked everyday for the betterment of the students".

He was "an amazing colleague who brought warmth and craic to the staffroom. A great teacher."

Woodwork was his main subject during his years in the school, and he also taught Graphics from time to time.
