Roscommon star calls time on inter-county career

Roscommon football star Conor Devaney has announced his retirement from inter-county football.

Devaney was on the Roscommon team that defeated Kerry after a replay in Ennis to win the 2006 All-Ireland minor football title.

The Kilbride man made his senior inter-county debut in 2007 and he went on to represent Roscommon 117 times, scoring an impressive 14-108 in the process.

During his time with the Roscommon senior team, Conor won two Connacht Senior Football Championship medals (2017 and 2019), two Allianz Football League Division 2 titles (2018 and 2020) and two FBD Connacht League titles (2018 and 2019).

Conor received an All-Star nomination in 2017 and, in 2018, he had the honour of being appointed as captain of the Roscommon senior team.

Roscommon GAA Chairperson Brian Carroll said: “On behalf of Roscommon GAA, I wish to thank Conor for his dedication and commitment to Roscommon GAA. Conor's skill and flair on the pitch was very evident from a young age and that magical left foot lit up many of the 117 games that Conor played in for the primrose and blue."

Mr Carroll wished Conor and his family the very best of luck in the future, also thanking Conor's club Kilbride for all their work in developing him from a young age into a "fine footballer".

Roscommon are now managed by Davy Burke, who has succeeded Anthony Cunningham. The Rossies will face Sligo in Burke's first competitive game in charge on Friday, January 13 (FBD Connacht League semi-final, Connacht GAA Air Dome, 7pm).

Roscommon's first Allianz Football League Division 1 game of 2023 will be at home to Tyrone on Sunday, January 29.
