Roscommon name Stack as new captain

Brian Stack has been appointed as captain of the Roscommon senior football team for the 2023 season.

The St Brigid's player has won two Connacht senior football medals with Roscommon (2017 and 2019). The talented and versatile defender (25) has also enjoyed senior championship success with his Kiltoom-based club.

St Brigid's GAA has congratulated Brian on his selection as captain, stating in a social medial post that there is "no better man for the job".

Stack is a past pupil of Marist College, Athlone and he played for the Marist in the 2014 Leinster Schools final which was won by Dublin’s Coláiste Eoin at Croke Park.

Brian's older brother Ronan has also represented Roscommon at all levels and was an All-Ireland club medal winner with St Brigid's in 2013.

Meanwhile, Tadhg O’Rourke of Tulsk Lord Edwards has been named as Roscommon vice-captain for 2023.

Roscommon begin their Allianz Football League Division 1 campaign against Tyrone on Sunday at Dr Hyde Park (throw-in 1.30pm). This will be Davy Burke's first league match in charge after he succeeded Anthony Cunningham as manager last year.

The Rossies lost out to Kevin McStay's Mayo charges in the FBD Connacht League final last Friday night - see report and reaction in this week's Westmeath Independent.
