Club championships take centre stage

The Westmeath senior, intermediate and junior football championships will take centre stage next weekend, with a busy programme of games over three days.

It all begins on Friday when the junior championship gets under way and there are big first round games in senior and intermediate scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. The main highlight will be the clash of reigning champions The Downs and last year's finalists, St Loman's, Mullingar, which is scheduled for TEG Cusack Park on Saturday evening (7.30pm). An attractive double-header includes the clash of Caulry and Coralstown/Kinnegad – the newly crowned Division 1 league champions – at 5.15pm.

Having just endured a tough All-Ireland series, the Westmeath players will have only a week to recover before they return to action with their clubs and a hectic 10 weeks lies ahead. The hurling championships will begin the following weekend.
