A man has sustained serious injuries in an assault at Mountjoy Prison in Dublin.

Gardaí confirmed the incident occurred on Monday evening.

The man, aged in his 30s, is currently receiving treatment for his injuries at a hospital in Dublin.

Gardaí said investigations into the matter are ongoing.

The Irish Prison Service said it does "not comment on individual prisoner cases".
