Local Airbnb which dates back to 1869 awarded prestigious accolade

A local Airbnb host has been awarded 'Best Room Host' for her beautiful private room stay in a period country house in Moyvore, Westmeath.

Deirdre O'Kane started hosting four years ago as a way to earn additional income when her grown-up children moved out of the home and loves welcoming guests into her home, with delicious home-made breakfasts and dinner on offer.

The country house dates back to 1869 and it's a warm, cosy home, full of character and charm.

Deirdre said that she was "absolutely delighted" to win the award. "I've been a traveller with Airbnb a lot longer than I've been a host and I've stayed in a lot of very nice places."

Deirdre also thanked all her former guests who left "particularly good reviews" that are very extensive. "I get repeat visitors which is always lovely when people decide to come back."

The local woman believes that she has hosted guests from every country in Europe except for Bulgaria. Deirdre thinks that her guests enjoy the long leisurely breakfast the most as she makes fresh scones and leaf tea. "I do put a lot of effort in, to make people as comfortable as possible."

Deirdre added: "It's actually fantastically interesting because you just meet people from all walks of life and all different age groups." The Airbnb host also gives cookery classes to some guests.

With the year coming to a close, Airbnb revealed Ireland’s top hosts for 2023. From the 'Best Design Stay' and 'Best New Host,' to 'Best Room Host,' 'Best Sustainable Stay' and 'Most Unique Stay,' the Airbnb Host Awards aim to shine a light on the Irish Hosts for the incredible work they do for guests and the benefits they bring to their wider communities.
