Concerns have been expressed over traffic buildups between the Daneshill roundabout in Monksland (pictured) and the roundabout at Junction 13 on the M6.

Call for extra filter lane 'as a matter of urgency' onto M6 near Monksland

The bottleneck of traffic being created between two South Roscommon roundabouts was highlighted at the January meeting of the Athlone Municipal District of Roscommon County Council which heard calls for a filter lane to be installed.

Cllr John Naughten told the meeting that “significant traffic congestion” is a feature of life on a daily basis for motorists who have to travel between the Daneshill roundabout and the Junction 13 (Monksland Athleague, Tuam) roundabout and the delays being experienced in the area are “totally unacceptable”.

He brought a motion before the meeting calling on Roscommon County Council to request Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to install an additional filter lane onto the east bound carriageway of the M6 at Junction 13 to alleviate the traffic congestion.

“The solution to this bottleneck of traffic is very simple, a filter lane would alleviate all the congestion, and it is just a case of TII acting on the installation of a filter lane as a matter of urgency.

As someone who travels through both roundabouts on a regular basis, Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, Cllr John Keogh, said this is a problem that is going to get “much much worse” unless a filter lane is installed and he seconded the motion put forward by Cllr Naughten.

It was agreed that the council would send a letter to Transport Infrastructure Ireland calling for the installation of an additional filter lane onto the east bound carriageway of the M6 at Junction 13 as a matter of urgency.
