Having served as a county councillor in Roscommon since 2019, Donal Kilduff said he won't be seeking re-election.

South Roscommon councillor confirms he won't seek re-election

Donal Kilduff, an Independent councillor in South Roscommon, confirmed today that he won't be seeking re-election in June.

The Glanduff, Kiltoom, man was elected to the local authority last time out, in 2019, and is a son of former Fianna Fáil councillor Paddy Kilduff.

Today (Thursday), Donal said his time on the council would now be coming to an end.

He admitted he had been "torn" about making the decision, which was why he had not announced it publicly until now.

However he cited frustration with the slow pace of progress in tackling longstanding issues in the county as one of the factors behind the decision not to run again.

"I find when I am at a council meeting it's usually time-consuming. You're away from your family, you're away from the business, and I'd like to feel that that time is well-served. And a lot of the time I feel it's not," he told Shannonside FM.

"A lot of the time we're talking about the same issues over and over again."

The local elections are taking place on Friday, June 7.

The five other sitting councillors on the Athlone Municipal District in Roscommon; Emer Kelly (Independent), John Naughten (Fine Gael), John Keogh (Fianna Fáil), Laurence Fallon (Independent) and Tony Ward (Independent) are all seeking re-election.
