Local star Payne to leave Everton later this month

Republic of Ireland international Heather Payne is set to leave Everton when her contract expires at the end of the month.

Payne has been with the English Women's Super League club since August 2023 after spending four years in the USA with Florida State Seminoles.

A native of Creagh in South Roscommon, Heather started her career as a youngster with Ballinasloe Town and also represented the ADSL, before moving on to play for Peamount United.

Payne won Everton's Young Player of the Season award in her debut campaign with the Toffees and made another 17 appearances last season.

A talented and versatile player who can operate in a number of positions, Payne is not in the Ireland squad for this month's friendlies against the USA due to injury.

"Heather has worked tirelessly and her improvement as a player, and a person, is clear to see. Her attitude and desire to win games has helped us massively throughout my time as head coach," said Everton head coach Brian Sorensen as the Merseyside club confirmed her departure.

The news means Payne won't get the chance to play home league games at Goodison Park next season. The Everton women's team will be playing their home games at the storied old venue from next season onwards, with the men's side moving to a newly-built stadium.
