Months-long Athlone road closure extended further

A road in the centre of Athlone which has been closed for most of this year, to facilitate ongoing work on the town's Main Drainage Project, has had its closure period extended by another month.

The closure to traffic of The Quay (South), on the western bank of the River Shannon (L-8015), began at the end of January.

In a notice posted online today (Thursday), Westmeath County Council said it had "decided to extend the closing to public traffic" of the L-8015 from tomorrow (Friday, June 20) to Thursday, July 17.

An alternative route from Main Street (L-4019) to Saint Peter's Port (L-8014) is to be signposted.

The Athlone Main Drainage Scheme, one of Uisce Éireann's largest projects to date, is a €114 million overhaul of the town's wastewater infrastructure.

It began in 2023 and is due to be completed later this year.
