Almost €800,000 funding announced for Moate

Minister Moran welcomes regeneration funding

Funding of almost €800,000 has been announced for Moate this morning under the Rural Regeneration programme.

The town is to receive €780,804 to advance the Town Centre First Plan, with detailed design works supporting improved parking, universal access, streetscape enhancement, and landscaping. A direct link from the Greenway to the town centre will strengthen tourism and sustainable transport - connecting people, place, and opportunity.

The funding for Moate, along with €1m for Delvin, has been warmly welcomed by Minister of State for Longford/Westmeath Kevin 'Boxer' Moran today.

“I am proud to welcome over €1.7 million in Rural Regeneration funding this morning for Moate and Delvin - two towns at the heart of our region, each with a strong community spirit and a clear vision for the future.

Speaking specifically about the funding for Moate, he told the Westmeath Independent: "It's terrific news. The council has huge plans for Moate. This will be used for street enhancement, parking enhancement and bringing access to the Greenway."

Commending the work done by the council, and volunteers, on the Greenway, he said the Greenway around Moate is looking fantastic.

"Only recently we gave them money for a lawnmower, through the Tidy Towns, and the work they've done is second to none," said Minister Moran.

"For far too long Moate had needed funding investment. Today is only part of it," he added.

"To connect the Greenway to the town is vital," he said, adding that this is a great way of ensuring local businesses are supported.

Minister Moran added: “These investments reflect the ambition of Westmeath County Council and the dedication of local stakeholders. This is about building vibrant, resilient communities where people can thrive.”

“As Minister of State and proud TD for Longford–Westmeath, I will continue to champion strategic investment in our towns and villages, ensuring that regeneration is locally led, future-focused, and inclusive.”

The Moate Town Team was established in 2023 on foot of the Moate Town Centre First Plan, which is a community level plan produced by the local Town Team, drawn from local community and business representatives, with the support of Westmeath County Council.

Earlier this year, Moate Town Team outlined a number of plans it hopes to bring to fruition for the town as part of the regeneration project, such as a rainwater garden and the creation of a community plaza. The news has also been welcomed by Mayor of Athlone/Moate District Vinny McCormack, who said: “This is fantastic news for Moate and a great day for the members of Moate Town Team who have been working tirelessly on a number of projects in the town for the past number of years. The potential projects highlighted in this funding award are extremely exciting and I have no doubt will be hugely important in allowing Moate to grow and prosper in the years ahead.

"Huge credit for this allocation must go to the officers of Moate Town Team for their diligence in putting together a fantastic application. I have been a member of the Town Team since its formation and I see first hand the commitment and pride that the members of this committee have for the town. I also want to thank Jason McCormack, Westmeath County Council’s regeneration officer who has put huge work into the plans which are the back bone of this successful application."
