Sullivan signs two-year deal with Athlone Town

Athlone Town AFC has confirmed that John Sullivan has signed a two-year contract as women’s team manager with the club.

Sullivan stepped into the role last month on an interim basis, following the sudden departure of Colin Fortune, and his first game in charge was the Europa Cup game away to Glasgow City. He has since guided Athlone to the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division title alongside assistant manager Gordon Brett.

Having previously served as assistant manager of the Athlone men’s team, Sullivan had some prior experience of working with the club. During his playing career, Sullivan had spells with Bray Wanderers, Dundalk and Shelbourne among other clubs.

The news of Sullivan's appointment comes as Athlone prepare for the Women's FAI Cup final against Bohemians on Sunday week. The recently crowned back-to-back Women's Premier Division champions will be presented with the trophy tomorrow (Saturday) when they host Sligo Rovers in their last league game of the season (4.30pm).

Speaking about his appointment as manager, Sullivan said: “I’m over the moon, I’ve got a great feeling in my stomach. The morale is always high with the team, they’re in great spirits.

"The ambition for next season is to continue the success so this time next year we’re in a similar position. I hope the fans enjoy the game on Saturday and they’re proud of the group for the hard work they’ve put in," he continued.

The appointment of Sullivan is not a surprise as he had given recent indications that he was interested in remaining in the position. And now the club has moved to clarify the situation before this season comes to an end.

"I've had some great conversations with the board. We're very aligned on a lot of things, so I'm sure there will be something on that in the next couple of weeks,” said Sullivan after Athlone clinched the league title with victory over Cork City last week.

Sullivan also praised the Athlone players for their attitude and performances since he became involved.

“They are a great bunch, and I'm very happy for them. I've said it previously, you know, big games and big moments need big players and we’ve got a dressing room full of them,” he said, following the 4-0 win over Cork.

“I'm a big believer in hard work and these girls work hard,” Sullivan added.
