January review for new Newtown Terrace parking system

A new system in Athlone’s Newtown Terrace put in place during the summer to deal with concerns over parking issues is to be reviewed in January, Westmeath County Council has confirmed.

In July, the council initiated a pilot project involving the removal of a 16-metre section of the double yellow lines on which people are often seen parking. The council said its plans would facilitate legal parking for three cars, and that it would impose a two-hour parking limit.

The issue of people parking illegally in the general vicinity of Newtown Terrace had been highlighted by local residents.

The council district engineer Willie Ryan said the move would "improve access and safety for residents of the terrace and visitors to the Newtown Medical Centre".

At the time, the decision to reduce the extent of the no-parking area was opposed by local residents.

The council update came in a written response to a question on the review date from Cllr Paul Hogan.
