New 'People of Athlone' photo display gets underway

Athlone Photography Club has announced the continuation of its acclaimed community photography project with The People of Athlone: Volume 2, a powerful exhibition celebrating the people who shape the town’s unique identity.

The exhibition will be held in the Athlone Towncentre shopping centre, with its official opening event taking place last Thursday (April 30). The exhibition will run until Tuesday, May 12.

Building on the success of The People of Athlone: Volume 1, the new instalment continues the club's mission to document and celebrate the everyday lives, stories, and diversity of Athlone through striking portrait photography.

The club said that, at its heart, the People of Athlone series "is about connection, capturing individuals in their natural environments, whether at work, at home, or within their community.

"From baristas and business owners to musicians, students and retirees, the exhibition reflects the rich tapestry of people who bring Athlone to life," it added.

The initiative also reflects a deeper ambition: to create an ongoing photographic record of Athlone’s people, a living archive that celebrates diversity, character, and shared experience across the town.

Speaking about the project, representatives from Athlone Photography Club said: "Every face has a story, and this exhibition is about telling those stories in a genuine and respectful way. It’s not just about photography, it’s about community, connection, and pride in where we live."

The exhibition forms part of the Fringe Festival for the RTÉ All Ireland Drama Festival.

Athlone Photography Club also acknowledged the generous support of West-Midlands Credit Union, whose sponsorship helped bring the project to life and ensured it remained accessible to the entire community.

Visitors can expect a compelling collection of high-quality portraits that go beyond traditional photography, with each image offering a glimpse into the personality, environment, and story of its subject.

The exhibition is free to visit and all are welcome. For more information, go to the www.athlonephotographyclub.com website or email hello@athlonephotographyclub.com
