'Deep sadness' at death of record-breaking goose from Banagher

Banagher farmer John Dolan has expressed "deep sadness" this week following the passing of Concepta the Goose, a much-loved local celebrity who captured hearts across Ireland with her remarkable story and gentle nature.

Concepta became famous after achieving a world-record feat by hatching goslings three times in a single year, an extraordinary achievement that brought her attention far beyond her local community.

Known affectionately as the “world champion hatching goose”, Concepta was far more than a record holder for many in Offaly.

She was a familiar face at local St Patrick’s Day parades, where she delighted crowds of children and families year after year.

She also paid regular visits to local children’s crèches, where youngsters had the rare opportunity to meet and greet the famous goose up close.

Her popularity saw her featured widely across Irish media, including appearances and coverage on the Today Show, and Agriland.

Paying tribute, owner John Dolan said: “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Concepta the Goose. Concepta was a remarkable goose, holding the world record for hatching three times in a single year. Her incredible vitality and ability to nurture new life were truly astonishing.

“She leaves behind a legacy of resilience and will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.”

Mr Dolan also recalled the joy Concepta brought to local communities over the years, especially children who met her during parades and school visits.
