Students from local schools in the Athlone area were commended for their insight and perspective as they took part in the 'This Is Living' photo competition recently.

The competition was run by Athlone Drug Awareness Group, with awards being presented to the winners at a ceremony in The Shamrock Lodge Hotel on Wednesday, April 15.

With almost 30 entries across two categories, Yulia Lukianets of Athlone Drug Awareness Group said that the standard of the submissions was 'inspiring'.

"For us, the most important thing was not the quality of the photo. Each photo showed a personal view of the world. Every work was unique and emotional," Yulia said.

"Students were invited to capture moments of joy, freedom, creativity, and connection. The main idea was to help [students] to see that even small simple things can bring light, energy, and a sense of life."

In the junior category, including students from first to third year, the first place prize was awarded to Meisha Finneran, a second year student from Colaiste Chiarain. Her stunning photograph depicts a bicycle leaning against a stone wall, with sunlight bringing a warm and inviting energy to the scene.

Second place was awarded to third year Coláiste Chiaráin student Conor Harris for his close up of pigeons resting on a persons arm, while third place went to Athlone Community College student Vova Lukianets for their shot of the town bridge.

In the senior category, Eilish Breheny, a fifth year student from Our Lady's Bower, was awarded first place for a beautiful picture of a tree overhanging on a canal.

The second place prize was awarded to Niamh Moran, a sixth year student from Our Lady's Bower, for her sunset shot of two cows in a field. Third place went to Shiobhan Ní Chluaid, a fifth year student from Coláiste Chiaráin, for a fabulous close-up of a yellow dandelion reaching towards the sun.

Each participant took home a token of Athlone Drug Awareness Group's appreciation in the form of a gift card for Athlone Town Centre Shopping Centre.
