Second public meeting on Athlone Boardwalk and Outdoor Pool
A second public meeting on the Athlone Boardwalk and Outdoor Pool project is set to take place later this month.
The meeting will take place on Monday, May 18, at Athlone Civic Centre from 4pm to 8pm.
The aim of the project is to provide a boardwalk linking the Athlone-Dublin Greenway to Burgess Park and beyond and, in tandem with that, to also provide an urban outdoor pool facility in the River Shannon.
A public consultation earlier this year on the boardwalk and outdoor pool project solicited over 225 responses.
The previous public consultation saw four emerging feasible locations for the outdoor swimming pool including Strand Square, Friary Strand, Wolfe Tone Terrace, and Burgess Park. The map also outlines (in yellow) the proposed boardwalk route.
"The boardwalk is essentially to be fixed from the Greenway Bridge to Burgess Park," said Westmeath County Council's Head of Regeneration & Capital Projects Anne-Marie Corroon at a previous meeting.
"We will be looking at slightly different ways of treating the boardwalk in different locations."
She added that the public consultation, significant stakeholders, as well as engagement from community groups and residents living locally would make up a part of the options selection process for the pool.
