Collision at level crossing causes major delays on Athlone-Westport rail line
Train services on the Athlone to Westport line have been severely disrupted this morning and early afternoon (Wednesday) following an incident in which a vehicle struck a level crossing in county Roscommon.
Shortly after 10am, Irish Rail reported that the 9.15am train from Athlone to Westport was stopped due to the collision between a vehicle and a level crossing.
According to the rail service, the crash happened at a level crossing between Roscommon and Castlerea.
It led to the 9.15am Athlone to Westport service being stalled for hours, with knock-on delays to other services on the line.
In an update at 1pm, an Irish Rail spokesperson said the level crossing "has been repaired" and that services "are expected to resume", though delays to scheduled services on the line are likely to continue for some time yet.
