McDaniel expected to become Municipal District Mayor

Fianna Fáil councillor Liam McDaniel is tipped to become the new Mayor of Athlone-Moate Municipal District when its AGM takes place in the Athlone Civic Centre on Monday, June 8.

The Kilbeggan-based elected representative is expected to replace outgoing 'first citizen' Cllr Vinny McCormack and fill the role until June 2027.

McDaniel, one of four Fianna Fáil Councillors elected to the Athlone-Moate Municipal District following the local elections in 2024, was previously elected to the role of Mayor in 2021.

He has also served two terms as Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, in 2023 and 2024, the first time since 1977/78 that the same person had served the position for two consecutive years.
