Castledaly's Margaret Molloy dies in her 106th year

Castledaly's Margaret Molloy has passed away in her 106th year.

Born Margaret O’Shea in Ballyduff, near Clonmacnoise, on July 18, 1920, she spent her early years in the area and attended the local national school, walking several miles each day and often taking a shortcut through Bloomhill Bog in her bare feet.

Speaking to the Westmeath Independent at the time of her 103rd birthday, her son Pat said Mary retained vivid memories of her schooldays throughout her life and was renowned among her family for her remarkable recall of events from decades past.

Margaret moved to Castledaly in 1943 following her marriage to Matthew (Matt) Molloy. Together they built their life on the family farm, where Margaret worked tirelessly for many decades.

Farming remained one of her great passions, and she continued to take a keen interest in the farm and its daily activities throughout her long life.

Known for her strong work ethic, Margaret was industrious from a young age. She made many of her own clothes and, before her marriage, worked in a large country house.

Her dedication to work never left her. Family members recalled that she rose at 6am every morning and remained active throughout the day.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Margaret was the heart of a large and loving family. She was predeceased by her husband Matt, her daughter Eileen and her son-in-law Pat Tormey.

She is sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her children Seán, Moira, Anne and Pat; her treasured grandchildren Aidan, Derek, Carol, Trish, Patricia, Joanne, Fiona, Mark, Declan, Therese, Patrice, Anne-Marie, Mairead and Angela; her 16 adored great-grandchildren; her sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.

Reposing at Flynn’s Funeral Home, Moate, on Thursday from 5pm, with removal at 6.20pm to St. Ciaran’s Church, Castledaly, arriving at 7pm for Funeral Prayers. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday at 12 noon, followed by burial in Kilcleagh Cemetery, Castledaly.

May she rest in peace.
