Athlone's favourite family dog wins national award

Athlone Labrador Cora Murniece has been named winner of the Family Pet Award at the second annual Petmania Ruby Heart Awards.

Cora was recognised for the joy, comfort and companionship she brings to everyone she meets. Known for her loving nature and special bond with children and families, Cora captured the hearts of judges and voters alike.

Amanda Murniece, Cora’s owner, said: "I am delighted that Cora has been announced as winner of Family Pet at the Petmania Ruby Heart Awards! She so deserves it and for everyone to see how amazing she is. She is so loving and caring so we would be so happy to see her shine, she will always be the winner in our eyes."

Athlone celebrated double success at the Ruby Heart Awards, with Beans and Leaves Café also taking home the Dog-Friendly Venue Award, helping establish the venue as one of Ireland's most dog-friendly destinations.

Through thoughtful touches such as water bowls, treats and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere, Beans and Leaves Café has become a favourite destination for dog owners from across the region.

Steven Linehan from Beans and Leaves said: "We're over the moon to have won Dog-Friendly Venue 2026 at the Petmania Ruby Heart Awards! We're so grateful, proud and delighted for all our team, and for all our customers who voted for us."

After receiving more than 700 nominations from across the country, just 30 finalists representing 15 counties were selected to attend the national awards ceremony in Kilkenny.

Hosted by broadcaster, sustainability influencer and DJ Fionnuala Moran, the awards celebrated the extraordinary impact animals have on people's lives and recognised the dedicated people, organisations and communities working tirelessly to improve animal welfare across Ireland.
