Road restoration work in Blyry and Cornamaddy areas deferred to 2027

Work to improve the road surface on the Bushfield Road (the road linking the Altown and Cornamaddy roundabouts), and to provide colour surfacing outside Cornamaddy school, have been deferred to next year.

The road restoration works were originally scheduled for 2026. However, Westmeath County Council has now confirmed to Cllr Frankie Keena that these works have been deferred to 2027.

The works will now align with the development of a proposed active travel route being undertaken in the area, in conjunction with the National Transport Authority.

"Coloured surfacing at the entrance to Cornamaddy CNS will be incorporated as part of the 2027 enhancement proposals," the council added.

The Active Travel plan involve a new network of cycle lanes and junction realignments being introduced between the Cornamaddy roundabout and the Wash House Turn roundabout at the Dublin Road, next to TUS.

The council's scheme is designed to improve facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, while maintaining traffic flow in this busy area of the town.

Key elements of the development include the provision of a 2.2m wide one-way segregated cycle track both sides of the carriageway, along with the provision of 2-metre-wide wide footpaths on both sides of the carriageway, with both "reducing in places where constraints exist".

Other elements of the development include junction realignments, the introduction of raised crossings on all side roads, and dedicated straight-through cycle crossings at junctions.

Signalised crossings for both pedestrians and cyclists are also planned, along with upgrades to the Garrycastle and Altown roundabouts.
