Westmeath and Roscommon groups share over €300,000 in enhancement funding
A total of 233 community and voluntary organisations in Westmeath and Roscommon are to benefit to the tune of over €330,000 in funding announced under the Local Enhancement Programme (LEP).
Some 148 groups in Westmeath have been allocated total funding of €172,338.03, while in Roscommon 85 groups received a total allocation of €162,497.60.
Amongst the main community and voluntary organisations to receive funding in South Westmeath were the Moate Town Team who were awarded €5,000 and the Connaught Street Traders & Environs Group who received €2,800.
A sum of €2,000 was allocated to Garrycastle GAA, €1,500 was awarded to the Streamstown Playground Committee, while Athlone Midland Samaritans received €1,000.
In Roscommon, amounts allocated to community and voluntary organisations varied from €460 up to €3,800.
The funding announcement was welcomed by local OPW Minister of State Kevin 'Boxer' Moran, who pointed out that the Local Enhancement Programme provides capital supports that are essential for many small community groups and organisations.
“These grants will provide valuable assistance to the volunteers, committees and community groups who work tirelessly every day to improve the quality of life in our towns, villages and neighbourhoods.
“The strength of our communities comes from the dedication of local people who give their time freely to support sports clubs, community centres, youth groups, senior citizens’ organisations, disability services and countless other voluntary initiatives.
"This funding will help many of these groups purchase equipment, improve facilities and continue delivering essential services," the OPW Minister said.
Local Minister of State, Deputy Robert Troy, acknowledged that community and voluntary organisations were the "backbone of our communities" the investment "recognising the enormous contribution they make".
"Their commitment makes Westmeath a better place to live, work and raise a family. I look forward to seeing the positive impact this funding will have in communities across the county," the Minister of State said.
The funding announcement was made by Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary and Minister of State with responsibility for Community Development and Charities, Jerry Buttimer.
The LEP 2026 will provide €7 million in capital funding nationally, supporting more than 4,100 projects across the country.
The programme assists community and voluntary groups, particularly those operating in disadvantaged urban and rural areas, through funding for equipment purchases, minor building improvements and facility upgrades.
