Locals "shocked and devastated" by death of much-loved Athlone hairdresser
Athlone is mourning the sudden passing of Mary Menton, a longstanding hairdresser on the west side of the town, who died at her home yesterday (Monday).
A mother of one and grandmother of two, Mary was a Baylough resident aged in her early 60s. She worked as a hairdresser in Athlone for decades, and operated the Cut N Shape salon on Connaught Street.
Local Minister of State Kevin 'Boxer' Moran said the people of the town had been left "shocked and devastated" at the news of her passing this week.
"Mary was a well-known member of the business community on Connaught Street, and a great person to go to for advice," said 'Boxer'.
"People are numb and very upset at this news, and our hearts go out in particular to her daughter and her grandchildren at this time."
The Connaught Street and Environs Community Group, meanwhile, extended its deepest sympathies to Mary's family, friends and neighbours.
"Connaught Street has lost one of its own," said the group. "Mary was a dear friend to us all for many many years and we are all devastated."
Mary Menton was predeceased by her parents, Colm and Mary (Moll). She is sadly missed by her heartbroken daughter Maria, adoring grandchildren Zach and Kali, partner Bernard, brothers Michael and Gerard, Maria’s partner Stephan, sisters in law Bríd and Sheila, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends and lifelong customers.
She will be reposing at her residence, 5 Rosemount Terrace, Baylough, tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday, from 4pm to 8pm.
Her funeral Mass will be held on Friday in the Church of Saints Peter and Paul at 12 noon, followed by burial in Coosan Cemetery.
Mary's funeral Mass may be streamed live here. Her relatives have requested family flowers only, please, and donations if desired to the Irish Heart Foundation.
May she rest in peace.
