Tenders invited for work on €30m Monksland link road project
Roscommon County Council has launched a tender process to appoint engineering consultants for the proposed Bogganfin/Tuam Road Link Road, also known as the Monksland Strategic Road, with the scheme estimated to cost up to €30 million.
The tender, launched on Wednesday, July 8, seeks consultants to progress the project through its design and planning stages, with submissions due by Tuesday, August 4, at 4pm.
The proposed 2.5km single-carriageway urban relief road would link the N61 Roscommon Road at Bogganfin with the roundabout near River Village at the Bealnamulla Road/Old Tuam Rd junction in Monksland, and will include cycle tracks, footpaths and public transport facilities.
The council says the project is intended to ease congestion in the Bogganfin and Monksland areas, where the roundabouts at Ganly's and near Novo Nordisk experience heavy traffic at peak times, while also supporting future development in the area.
According to the project brief, the selected route would “support and facilitate the integration of land use with transportation infrastructure” in an area with significant development potential and limited connections to the existing road network.
The proposed link road would provide active travel and public transport facilities between Monksland and Bogganfin, while improving connectivity across the area.
The successful consultant will oversee the project through four phases over approximately three years, beginning with concept development and feasibility studies before moving to route selection and the identification of a preferred option.
Later stages will include detailed design, environmental assessments, land and property consultations, preparation of a business case and completion of the statutory planning process.
The scheme has been identified in the Roscommon County Development Plan 2022–2028 as a planned non-national road improvement project, with the project brief estimating the overall cost at between €20 million and €30 million.
