Athlone vet warns to keep pets away from Lough Ree over possible toxic algae
An Athlone vet has warned pet owners to keep their animals out of the water at Lough Ree, as they fear possible toxic algae is present in the lake.
The warning from Athlone Veterinary Hospital comes as a number of dogs have presented to the clinic after recently visiting the lake.
"Several dogs have fallen ill, and tragically have died, after being in Lough Ree. While we can’t confirm the cause, we suspect it may be linked to toxic algae," the vet wrote.
"To be safe, we strongly advise keeping dogs away from Lough Ree, especially those visiting the area, as they seem to be more vulnerable."
The clinic warned pet owners to keep an eye out for sudden illness, diarrhea, or vomiting, and to contact your vet immediately if any symptoms are shown.
