Athlone bridge to go green and red in support of Mayo
Athlone Railway Bridge will be illuminated in the green and red colours of Mayo this weekend in support of the county's appearance in Sunday's All-Ireland senior football final.
Irish Rail said it will mark the county's achievement in reaching the final with the symbolic gesture in support of Mayo's quest to win Sam Maguire.
Barry Kenny, Irish Rail Corporate Communications Manager, confirmed to the Westmeath Independent that the Athlone Railway Bridge will be alight with the green and red in advance of Mayo's clash with Kerry.
Mayo will be hoping to end 75 years of Sam Maguire hurt, and in the process defeat the reigning All-Ireland champions, when the counties take to the hallowed turf at GAA headquarters in Croke Park on Sunday afternoon (throw-in 3.30pm).
It has become tradition to see the Athlone Railway Bridge illuminated in the colours of county teams from Connacht is they're participating in All-Ireland finals.
Five years ago, the bridge was also lit up in the green and red of Mayo before the county was defeated by Tyrone in the 2021 All-Ireland senior football final.
