Athlone women's FAI Cup match to be televised this weekend
Athlone Town's upcoming Club Orange Women's FAI Cup semi-final against Galway Utd is to be screened live on TG4 this weekend.
The defending champions will play host to Galway Utd at Athlone Town Stadium on Saturday, August 22 (kick-off: 7.35pm). TG4's live coverage of the occasion will begin at 7.15pm.
Until recently, Galway had been the early pacesetters in the League of Ireland Women's Premier Division, and were responsible for Athlone's only league defeat of the current campaign.
Before Athlone's league match against Peamount Utd this Wednesday evening (Greenogue Park, Dublin, 7.45pm), Galway sit four points behind league leaders Athlone in the Premier Division.
Galway will feel they will represent a major obstacle to Athlone's bid to retain the cup, after the westerners defeated Sligo Rovers in the quarter-finals.
However, Athlone has scored 17 goals in its last five domestic outings (five straight wins), and have been in fine form to regain top-spot in the league.
Included among their recent impressive performances was a 5-3 extra-time defeat of Shamrock Rovers in the quarter-finals.
Last night (Tuesday), fellow league challengers Shelbourne kept the heat on Athlone at the top of the Premier Division by beating Wexford FC, 1-0.
That victory moved Shelbourne level on points with Athlone, but the Town has played two games less (before this evening's match against Peamount).
After this evening's match, Athlone will have eight games remaining as they continue to strive for a third straight Premier Division title, a feat not previously achieved since the league's formation in 2011.
