Disgust at "new low in vandalism" at midland cemetery

Independent Ireland councillor Fergus McDonnell has hit out at what he said was wanton vandalism carried out in Edenderry Cemetery last evening.

A number of people visiting their family graves in Edenderry cemetery Thursday evening were horrified to see seating removed from a number of graves and set alight. The incident required the attendance of Edenderry Fire Service with local Gardai also in attendance.

Councillor McDonnell said the behaviour marked a new low in vandalism.

"I’m absolutely shocked at the depths people go to offend the common good," stated a disgusted Councillor McDonnell.

"Unfortunately, this is not the first incident of this type in Edenderry cemetery," he said.

"I discovered from my contact with Edenderry Fire Service, a similar incident earlier in the week and a second earlier on Thursday also required their attendance. Following contact with Gardai, Councillor McDonnell has been advised additional patrols are in place and Gardai are determined to apprehend the culprits.
