Big local derby in Westmeath SFC quarter finals

Athlone and Moate All Whites have been drawn together in the quarter finals of the Westmeath Senior Football Championships tonight.

The two teams, along with Tubberclair, were three of the four teams in the draw for the quarter finals after the conclusion of the opening rounds of the championship this weekend.

Tubberclair will face St Loman's in the other quarter final, with Coralstown/Kinneged and The Downs, who finished in the top two places in Section A, qualifying directly for the semi finals.

The draw took place tonight and followed the final rounds of games in the Shay Murtagh Precast SFC this weekend.

Garrycastle lost out on the third and final qualifying spot in the Section A by virture of their defeat to The Downs, combined with St Loman's win over Caulry.

Garrycastle finished fourth in Section A, which, up to the reconfiguration of the championship knock-out qualification system this season, would have secured them a quarter final spot in previous campaigns.

Instead, three teams from Section B qualified for the quarter finals, instead of the previous two. Tubberclair, Moate All Whites and Athlone had all secured the top three spots in Section B, and with it quarter final berths, prior to this weekend's games. With an open draw for the quarter finals, finishing positions within the top three spots in Section B were irrelevant rendering the Athlone v Tubberclair game somewhat meaningless.

The quarter final line up is Moate All Whites v Athlone; Tubberclair v St Loman's. Fixture details have not yet been released.

The final round results in the Westeath SFC were as follows:

Section A - The Downs 3-15 Garrycastle 2-11; Coralstown/Kinnegad 1-17 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-10; St Loman's Mullingar 0-18 Caulry 0-15.

Section B - Moate All Whites 2-12 Killucan 1-9; Tubberclair 2-18 Athlone 3-15; Tyrrellspass 0-18 Tang 0-17.
