Crossing to be installed at Aldi in Moate ahead of opening later this year

A pedestrian crossing will be installed at the new Aldi location on Moate's Athlone Road ahead of the stores opening towards the end of 2026.
Cllr Tom Farrell asked whether a previously passed motion asking for the installation of a crossing at the site would be completed.
In response, the Council Executive noted the crossing would be installed at the expense of the developer.
"The Aldi development is currently under construction, and a condition of Planning Ref. 23/60173 requires the provision of a controlled pedestrian crossing on the R446 at the developer's expense.
"Based on current information, it is anticipated that the crossing will be in place before the end of the year to coincide with the opening of the store."
Work on building the supermarket on the Athlone Road approach to Moate began earlier this year, and there are indications locally that it could be ready for opening as soon as late October.
"We plan to open the store later this year and are looking forward to sharing in due course updates and full details, including the number of jobs the new store will create."
Recruitment for jobs in the Moate branch has already begun, with the first store assistant positions advertised online in July of this year.
