‘Remembering Dervla Murphy’ exhibition

Athlone Art Gallery will mark Culture Night 2026 with a special event ‘Remembering Dervla Murphy’.

The collaborative multi-sensory exhibition will launch on Friday, September 18, at 6pm, across two venues The Athlone Bookshop and the Athlone Art Gallery, both in The Village @ Burgess, Lloyds Lane Athlone. It will run until the end of September.

The exhibition will be launched by Ethel Crowley, friend of and curator of Dervla’s literary estate at 6pm, Friday, September 18.

Photos taken by Alastair Gray for the Irish Times back in late 1970s early 1980s, of Dervla marking her renovation of and move to the Old Market yard in Lismore, as well as her books will be on display on the evening.

"Alastair’s mother was a friend of Dervla and stayed with Dervla and her daughter back in the day. She was a fascinating person, a woman who lived life her way and who held strong beliefs about travel, the people of the world, wars and the environment, way ahead of her time. We’ll also have a sound archive of her distinctive voice and opinions," said Rosie Boles, Burgess of Athlone.
