TUS pays €360,000 to settle employment dispute

The Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest has made payments of €360,000 in the settlement of an employment-related legal dispute, it has emerged.

Details of the settlement agreement were included in the technological university’s annual financial statement published on Wednesday.

The agreement on the legal matter included a settlement payment of €300,000 and a contribution of €60,000 to the legal fees of the other party. The payments were made in April and May of this year.

TUS said its total legal fees on the matter amounted to €125,273.

The university’s Corporate Governance Statement, included as part of the annual financial statement, said TUS had entered a mediation process as approved by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, in relation to what it said was an “ongoing employment related dispute”.

“Having taken legal advice and assessed the potential legal and resource cost impact on TUS, the Governing Body approved the Settlement Agreement outcome of the mediation process at its meeting on 23rd February, 2026”.

The identity of the other party to the settlement was not disclosed, nor has the location or locations of the campus or campuses involved.

In a statement, TUS said: “To protect the privacy of our staff and students, we do not disclose specific details in relation to matters of this nature. All such cases are dealt with via the appropriate procedures and are reported to the relevant body in line with the Code of Practice for Governance of State Bodies.”
