Hanley departs as Roscommon hurling manager

Brian Hanley has stepped down from his role as Roscommon senior hurling manager after one year in charge.

A native of Athenry, Brian enjoyed a hugely successful playing career with his home club, winning eight Galway SHC titles and three All-Ireland senior club crowns.

He represented Galway at minor and U21 level before going on to build an extensive coaching and management career, including a spell in charge of the Westmeath senior hurling team. He also guided his native Galway to All-Ireland minor hurling success on two occasions.

Roscommon GAA noted that Hanley oversaw "the continued development of the senior hurling panel throughout the season" and sincerely thanked Brian for "the commitment, dedication and professionalism" he has shown to Roscommon hurling throughout his time as manager.

In 2026, Roscommon finished bottom of the Christy Ring Cup table, losing four of their five games, with their only point coming from a draw against Donegal. However, the Rossies fared better in Division 3 of the National Hurling League, winning four of their six games.

Roscommon Hurling Committee chairperson Christy McDermott has thanked Brian for his contribution.

“On behalf of Roscommon GAA, I would like to thank Brian for the time, energy and commitment he has given to the Roscommon senior hurling team over the past year. We greatly appreciate the work he has done with the players and his management team, and we wish Brian every success in the future,” said McDermott.

“Roscommon GAA also extends its sincere thanks to Brian’s management and backroom team for their commitment and contribution throughout the season.

“The process to appoint a new Roscommon senior hurling manager will commence in due course,” he added.
