Council to mark 200 years of local church
The St Mary's Church of Ireland congregation in Athlone is to be awarded a Civic Address of Recognition by Municipal District of Athlone-Moate.
The decision to grant the recognition was made at the district's most recent meeting, after Fianna Fáil's Cllr Frankie Keena put forward the suggestion to mark the church's 200th year in Athlone, in 2027.
Cllr Keena described the church, located in the heart of Athlone, as 'a focal point of the town'.
“It is only right that Athlone marks 200 years of active ministry in the church since it was consecrated as a place of worship in 1827,” said Cllr Keena.
The motion was seconded by Fine Gael councillor John Dolan, and it was agreed that a civic address of recognition will be held next year.
