Councillor says Moate is 'a priority' for speed reduction measures

Additional speed reduction measures on Moate's approach roads will be considered by Athlone-Moate Municipal District.

News of the considerations came in the wake of a recent motion by Cllr Vinny McCormack to make it 'a priority' to reduce speeding issues on the approach roads to Moate.

In reply to Cllr McCormack's motion, the council said the issues will be considered 'in the context of the District's traffic calming programme, available funding and council members' agreed priorities'.

'Members should note that a number of priority villages have already been identified for intervention and any additional measures for Moate will be assessed alongside other competing demands across the District', the council said.

In addition, the council said a raised pedestrian crossing is 'anticipated' in conjunction with the Aldi development currently under construction.

The council added that it is 'noteworthy' to acknowledge the Low Cost Safety measures delivered on the eastern approach to Moate in 2024.

'Separately,' the council said, 'the District is engaging with the Active Travel Team regarding the review and potential upgrade of pedestrian crossings within the town core. The outcome of these discussions, and any proposed improvements, will be subject to National Transport Authority funding approval. The members will be updated as these discussions progress'.
