Local volunteers bring Samhain to life at Dún na Sí

The ancient traditions and authentic folklore of Samhain will take centre stage at Dún na Sí Amenity & Heritage Park in Moate as the park prepares to welcome visitors to The Spooktacular Summoning on Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25.

This original, community-created Halloween experience draws on Ireland’s ancient Samhain traditions, folklore and storytelling, transforming the park into an atmospheric and immersive experience for families and visitors of all ages. The event is part of Ireland, Home of Halloween for the second consecutive year, an all-island programme led by Fáilte Ireland, Tourism Ireland and Tourism Northern Ireland that celebrates Ireland as the birthplace of Halloween.

At the heart of The Spooktacular Summoning is an incredible team of local volunteers who give their time, creativity and energy to bring the event to life. From designing and building decorations and creating characters and scenes to preparing the venue, performing during the event and welcoming visitors, volunteers are involved in almost every aspect of the experience.

At a time when many large-scale Halloween experiences are commercially organised, Dún na Sí offers something distinctive: an event shaped and delivered by the community itself. Local people play a central role in creating an experience that celebrates Ireland’s heritage and traditions while bringing the community together. Their enthusiasm, skills and commitment are essential to making The Spooktacular Summoning possible.

What visitors experience over Halloween weekend is the result of weeks of preparation behind the scenes, as volunteers work alongside park staff to transform the venue and bring the stories and atmosphere of Samhain to life.

This year, the first session each evening will be dedicated to children with sensory sensitivities. With reduced lighting, noise and spooky effects, these sessions aim to provide a calmer and more accessible experience for children who may find the regular event overwhelming. All children attending the event will receive a sweet treat.
