Athlone's Marist College marks 140th anniversary

Athlone's Marist College has marked its 140th anniversary of education in the town.

The all-boys secondary school was founded in 1884 by the Marist Brothers, a French Order, and the first principal was Brother Mungo.

Originally based in Glesson Street/Saint Mary's Square, the school relocated to it's current location on Retreat Road in 1973.

To mark the historic anniversary, the school created a special time capsule to preserve memories from the school community.

The capsule will be re-opened in 30 years time, during the academic year 2054/2055, to give future students a glimpse into the past.

The anniversary event took place before the Easter mid-term break.
