Motorist recorded driving 181km/h in a 100km zone over bank holiday weekend

A driver was recorded speeding at 181km/h in a 100km/h zone on the N25 Ballynamone, Co Kilkenny over the bank holiday weekend.

Gardaí recorded over 3,000 drivers speeding between 7am on Thursday and 7am on Tuesday.

Other speeds included a driver 151km/h in a 100km zone in Drumfin, Co Sligo.

A motorcyclist was recorded driving 129km/h in a 60km/h zone on Navan Road, Dublin 15.

Over the weekend, there were two fatalities on the roads, while six serious collisions resulted in six individuals sustaining severe and life-threatening injuries.

Some 13,000 breath tests and approximately 280 oral fluid tests were carried out at over 1,000 checkpoints, leading to 187 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Gardaí said 270 drivers were given fixed charged notices for using their phone while driving, along with 340 Unaccompanied learner drivers, and 115 not wearing seatbelts.

147 vehicles were seized from learner permit holders driving unaccompanied, while 444 vehicles were seized for having no tax or insurance.
